Heavy rain fall yesterday, Monday (8/11), had caused several areas in South Jakarta inundated. The worse inundations were suffered by Kemang and Mampang.

Jakarta Vice Governor Basuki T Purnama admitted has received reports on flood that inundated Kemang and Mampang. Based on those reports, the inundations were caused by the overflowing of Krukut River and its sheet piles which were ruined by the residents.
“The flood happened because Krukut River width is only 2-3 meters. The case is the same to Sunter River and Sentiong River,” he stated, Tuesday (8/12).
Flood inundates Hundreds of HousesAccording to Basuki, the sheet piles installed as walls on the riverbank were ruined by the residents to make the water that inundated their settlement flows into to the river. However, the situation became reversed due to the river could not accommodate more water.
“We’ve installed sheet piles on the river. But the residents in slum area, when their settlement inundated, the sheet piles were detached and holed so water could flow into the river,” he explained.
Basuki also uttered that ideally Krukut River width is 20-30 meters. Because of that, the slum area on Krukut Riverbank will be controlled.
“Just demolished the slum area on Krukut riverbank, because the river as wide as three meters won’t be able to accommodate water, the water will overflow. Ideally, Krukut River should be widened for 20-30 meters,” he stated.
As known, heavy rain fall yesterday made some areas in the city inundated with water level varied between 10-80 centimeters. The locations suffered the worse inundations were Kemang and Mampang where water level reached 80 centimeters. As a result, the traffic in those areas became paralyzed.
